Aarti Devi is a rising politician, the daughter of an ambitious man who pushed her into public life. During an election campaign she stays at a hotel in a quiet hill town and recognises its manager, J. K., the husband she separated from years earlier because their marriage could not survive her ambitions. In a series of flashbacks and tentative meetings, the two revisit what they had and lost, while her rivals look for scandal. Gulzar's Aandhi ("storm") is a tender, adult love story set against politics. Suchitra Sen, the Bengali star, gives one of her few Hindi performances, and Sanjeev Kumar won the Filmfare Best Actor award. R. D. Burman's songs, including Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi, Tum Aa Gaye Ho Noor Aa Gaya and Is Mod Se Jaate Hain, are classics. The film was briefly banned during the Emergency.
