Gerulal, a lonely truck driver, takes a room in a remote hill village with Jugni, a former dancer, and her three daughters: practical Nimki, who keeps the family afloat, gentle Mitthu, who cannot speak, and Chinki, the youngest, who dreams of dancing. Poor and proud, the women live on the edge, and Gerulal's quiet kindness slowly makes him one of the household, while the question of what will become of the sisters hangs over everything. Namkeen is one of Gulzar's most delicate films, adapted from a Bengali story by Samaresh Basu and built on restrained performances, especially from Sanjeev Kumar, Waheeda Rehman and Shabana Azmi. R. D. Burman's songs, among them "Raah pe rehte hain" and "Phir se aaiyo badra bidesi", are much loved.
