In the chaos of Partition, Shanti is separated from her husband and ends up across the border, where she spends years before finally making her way back to Delhi. There, her husband's family refuses to accept her. Alone, she is given shelter by Chhalia, a happy-go-lucky street rogue, and between them grows a bond that he never expected. Meanwhile Pran plays Abdul Rehman, a hardened Pathan whose story is tied to hers. Chhalia was Manmohan Desai's first film as director, years before his famous lost-and-found masalas, and its themes of separation and reunion already show his signature. Kalyanji–Anandji's songs, including the title song "Chhalia Mera Naam" and "Dum Dum Diga Diga", made it a musical hit.
