Sampat is a charming opportunist who can talk anyone into anything. He attaches himself to people with money or ambition, a businessman, a would-be patron of the arts, a hopeful actress, and spins schemes that always seem to benefit him most. As the stakes grow, the people he has fooled start to see through the patter. Mr. Sampat is a Hindi adaptation of R. K. Narayan's novel Mr. Sampath (The Printer of Malgudi), made by S. S. Vasan of Madras, the producer-director behind Chandralekha. Motilal, admired for his natural, understated acting, is well suited to the title role, and the film is remembered as an early example of political and social satire in Hindi cinema, poking fun at elections, theatre and easy money.
