Babu is a small-time Bombay crook on the run after a killing. A fellow criminal sends him to a hill village to pose as the long-lost son of a wealthy family, so that he can rob them. Welcomed with tears and love by the parents, Babu begins to change, but his feelings for Maya, the daughter of the house who believes he is her brother, put him in an impossible position. Raj Khosla's bold, brooding drama features one of Dev Anand's most intense performances and the only pairing of Dev Anand with Bengali star Suchitra Sen. S. D. Burman's songs are classics, notably "Chal Ri Sajni Ab Kya Soche", the bride's farewell song sung by Mukesh, and "Deewana Mastana Hua Dil".
