Kottai Mariamman (2001)

Kottai Mariamman is a 2001 Tamil devotional film directed by Rama Narayanan, a prolific maker of goddess films, many featuring animals and miracles, who directed well over a hundred films. Roja plays the goddess Mariamman, the village mother goddess of Tamil Nadu, while Devayani plays a devoted woman whose family is attacked by a sorcerer and his evil powers, with Karan in the cast. Through a series of trials and miracles the goddess protects her devotee and defeats the forces of darkness. The film has the elements Rama Narayanan's audiences expected: dramatic transformations of the goddess, devotional songs in praise of Amman, temple festival scenes and a climactic battle between divine power and the sorcerer's magic. Such Amman films were especially popular with family audiences in Tamil Nadu and were widely dubbed into other languages.
