In a small town, a new police officer arrives determined to enforce the law without fear or favour. His honesty quickly puts him at odds with the local politicians and businessmen used to having the police in their pockets, and with his own wife, who wants an easier life. As the pressure mounts, he decides that the only way to change the system is to enter it himself. Hrishikesh Mukherjee, better known for gentle middle-class comedies like Chupke Chupke and Gol Maal, here made a satirical drama about politics and corruption. It gave Shatrughan Sinha a rare restrained hero's role, with Bengali actress-director Aparna Sen as his wife and Utpal Dutt as a wily politician.
