Naastik (1954)

When a young man's family is torn apart amid the violence of Partition and his prayers go unanswered, he declares himself a naastik, an unbeliever, and sets out to take what life has denied him, even by crooked means. His bitterness brings him into contact with a woman whose own suffering has not shaken her faith, and the two of them, with the people around them, test whether goodness can survive in a broken world. Naastik is remembered above all for its music by C. Ramchandra and for Kavi Pradeep's song "Dekh Tere Sansar Ki Halat Kya Ho Gayi Bhagwan", sung by Pradeep himself, a heartfelt lament about the state of humanity that is still widely quoted. Ajit and Nalini Jaywant play the leads.
