Ramesh is a briefless young lawyer who, short of money, takes a room as a paying guest with a large and lively family. He spars and then falls in love with Shanti, the daughter of the house, and the first half is a sparkling romantic comedy full of mischief and music. Later, misunderstandings and a crime turn the story towards melodrama and the courtroom, where Ramesh must finally prove himself as an advocate. Paying Guest is one of the most charming Dev Anand romances of the 1950s, and Nutan matches him with a playful, confident performance. S. D. Burman's score is the real treasure, with Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega, Maana Janaab Ne Pukara Nahin and O Nigahen Mastana among its hits.
