Bharat's father died in the freedom struggle, betrayed by a man he trusted. After Independence, Bharat travels to England for higher studies and stays with an Indian family who have lived abroad for years. He is dismayed to find many expatriates embarrassed by their own culture, and especially by Preeti, the family's daughter, who is entirely Western in her ways. As Bharat and Preeti fall in love, he sets out to show her and others the values of the home they left. Purab Aur Paschim ("East and West") is one of Manoj Kumar's signature patriotic films, following Upkar, and helped fix his "Mr. Bharat" image. It was a major hit, and Kalyanji-Anandji's songs, among them "Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada" and "Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De", remain much loved.
