Description

Seth Lakshmidas is a rich, ruthless businessman who measures everything in money. When his plane crashes in a remote area, he is rescued by a couple from a tribal community who live by sharing and simple needs. Exposed to their world, and then bringing them into his, he sets the two ways of life side by side, and the film builds into a pointed critique of greed, exploitation and the worship of wealth. Roti ("bread") is one of the early social films of Mehboob Khan, who later made Mother India. It is also remembered for the presence of Akhtaribai Faizabadi, the great ghazal singer later known as Begum Akhtar, in one of her few film roles, and for Anil Biswas's music.
