Mehboob Khan
Director and producer (1907-1964)
Mehboob Khan was born Ramzan Khan in Bilimora, in Gujarat, ran away to Bombay and worked as an extra before anyone let him direct. The triangle he spent his career on starts here: Anmol Ghadi is two childhood friends and the woman who loves one of them, and Anokhi Ada (1948) and Andaz (1949) are the same shape rebuilt. He made Aan (1952), the first Indian feature in Technicolor, and then remade his own Aurat (1940) as Mother India (1957), which is the film everything else of his is now measured against. Faredoon Irani photographed nearly all of it. The emblem of Mehboob Productions is a hammer and sickle over a couplet about everything happening by God's will - a contradiction he never explained and never removed.
