Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974)

Bharat is the eldest son of a poor family, educated and principled but unable to find work in a country gripped by unemployment and rising prices. While he refuses to compromise, his younger brother Vijay turns angry and rebellious, and his girlfriend Sheetal is lured by the wealthy businessman Mohan Babu, who can offer her security. As the family's troubles mount, Bharat is pushed to the edge and forced to decide how far honesty can go in a corrupt world. Roti Kapda Aur Makaan ("food, clothing and shelter") was the biggest hit of 1974 and won Manoj Kumar the Filmfare Award for Best Director. Laxmikant-Pyarelal's songs, including "Mehngai Maar Gayi", "Hai Hai Yeh Majboori" and "Main Na Bhoolunga", captured the mood of the times.
