Shankar, a doctor, agrees to an arranged marriage with Gauri, but from the first night it is clear that his new wife is weighed down by something she will not speak of. Her silence and guilt strain the marriage while the people around them misread what is happening. Hrishikesh Mukherjee handles the story with his usual restraint, and Meena Kumari gives one of her quietly devastating performances. It was one of Guru Dutt's last films as an actor before his death in October 1964. Shankar-Jaikishan's songs include Ajhun Na Aaye Baalma and the title song, and Mehmood provides a comic subplot.
