Manav, son of a wealthy Mumbai businessman, is holidaying in the hills of Himachal Pradesh when he meets Mansi, daughter of a simple folk musician, and the two fall in love. When Manav's family arrives and makes clear that they look down on Mansi's people, her father is deeply insulted, and the romance seems over. Back in Mumbai, Mansi's voice is discovered by Vikrant Kapoor, a flamboyant music producer, who turns her into a star and falls for her himself, leaving her caught between two men and two worlds. Subhash Ghai's lavish musical is remembered above all for A. R. Rahman's soundtrack, one of the best-selling of its time, including Taal Se Taal Mila and Ishq Bina. Anil Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award, and Rahman won Best Music Director.
