Thackeray follows Bal Thackeray from his years as a cartoonist on a Bombay newspaper, angry at the place of Marathi-speaking people in their own city, to the founding of the Shiv Sena in 1966 and the decades in which it became a force in Maharashtra's politics. The film covers his speeches, his campaigns, his clashes with governments and the courts, and the controversies of his career, framed largely from the perspective of his admirers. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays Thackeray, with Amrita Rao as his wife Meena. The film was shot simultaneously in Marathi and Hindi and was written and produced by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, which shaped its sympathetic view. It was released in January 2019, close to Thackeray's birth anniversary.
