The film follows Bal Thackeray from his days as a cartoonist in 1960s Bombay, angry at the place of Marathi people in their own city, through the founding of the Shiv Sena in 1966 and the decades in which he became a feared and adored force in Maharashtra politics. Framed around a court appearance, it moves through key episodes of his career and his marriage to Meena, played by Amrita Rao. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a non-Maharashtrian actor, took on the title role, with his make-up and mannerisms widely discussed. The film was made in both Marathi and Hindi and was produced by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, so it presents its subject from a sympathetic standpoint.
