Shamsher Singh is a simple, honest railway engine driver until his son is killed by a gang of smugglers. Grief turns him to vengeance, and in time he becomes the most powerful underworld boss in the land, while raising his grandson Kunal in innocence, away from the truth of how the family's wealth was made. When Kunal grows up and falls in love, the old enemies and the old crimes come back to claim them all. Vidhaata ("destiny") was one of Subhash Ghai's grand multi-star dramas and the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1982, with Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar and Shammi Kapoor sharing the screen, and Sanjay Dutt in only his second film. Kalyanji–Anandji's songs, including Saat Saheliyan, were huge hits.
