Anita, a sporty young heiress, will lose her fortune unless she marries within a month of her birthday. Her aunt Seeta Devi, a fierce campaigner against men, arranges a paper marriage with Preetam, an unemployed cartoonist, planning an immediate divorce. But Preetam has already fallen for Anita, and he sets out to win his own wife. Guru Dutt's screwball romantic comedy pokes fun at the debate over the new divorce law of the time while remaining a sparkling entertainment. Madhubala is radiant, Johnny Walker and Lalita Pawar provide superb comic support, and O. P. Nayyar's songs, including "Thandi Hawa Kali Ghata", "Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji" and "Udhar Tum Haseen Ho", are timeless.
