Description

Shabnam is a young girl from a poor family in Hyderabad, in love with Sarju, a gentle young man from her neighbourhood. But her family is in debt, and a marriage broker arranges for her to be married to a wealthy elderly man from the Gulf, in a practice that was little better than buying a bride. Meanwhile Najma, a woman who has long been the mistress of the ambitious Akhtar, sees in Shabnam's fate a reflection of her own, and Salim, a poet who loves Najma, watches the bargaining with growing anger. Bazaar ("the marketplace") is one of the strongest films of the parallel cinema movement, an angry and tender look at women treated as goods. Khayyam's music, with ghazals such as "Phir Chhidi Raat", "Dikhai Diye Yun" and "Karoge Yaad To", is considered among the finest of the decade.
