Description

Anand, a cheerful Punjabi, arrives in New Delhi and finds that landlords in the city's neat colonies want tenants only from their own community. So he pretends to be a South Indian to get a room, which works until he falls in love with Janaki, a Tamil girl from a traditional family that has no wish to marry its daughter outside the community. A breezy comedy of disguises becomes a gentle satire on the regional prejudices of the young capital. The film shows Kishore Kumar at his comic best, while Vyjayanthimala, a trained Bharatanatyam dancer, gets dance numbers that show off her classical skill. Shankar–Jaikishan's songs and the 1950s Delhi backdrop make it a charming period piece, and its plea for India to look past caste and region still holds.
