Shakti comes back from London with his modern girlfriend Anita, ready to tell his father, the respected village head Raja Thakur, that he wants to start a business in the city. But the village is torn by a long feud with his father's cousin and his violent son, and when a quarrel over a gate and a temple turns deadly, Shakti finds himself bound by duty to his people. His life takes a turn that brings him to the simple village girl Gehna. Virasat ("inheritance") is Priyadarshan's Hindi remake of Kamal Haasan's Tamil classic Thevar Magan (1992). Anil Kapoor gives one of his finest performances, Tabu is unforgettable as Gehna, and Amrish Puri brings rare warmth to the father. Anu Malik's songs, including "Payle Chunmun Chunmun" and "Dhol Bajne Laga", were popular, and the film won several Filmfare Awards.
