Inspector Prabhakar is close to exposing a respected businessman, Dindayal, as the master criminal behind a smuggling ring when he is murdered. His superior then discovers that a convict in jail, the rough, violent Kalicharan, looks exactly like the dead officer, and persuades him to take Prabhakar's place in his house and in the hunt for the killers. Living with the dead man's children awakens something in Kalicharan, and the masquerade becomes a mission of his own. Kalicharan was the debut of director Subhash Ghai and established Shatrughan Sinha as a leading man. It is also famous for Ajit's suave villain, whose line about being known in the city as "Loin" became one of the most imitated in Hindi cinema, and for Kalyanji-Anandji's music.
