Description

Suresh Sinha is one of the most admired directors in Bombay, but his marriage has collapsed and his wife's wealthy family keeps him away from his beloved daughter Pammi. On a rainy night he meets Shanti, a shy young woman, and casts her in his new film; she becomes a star, and the two drift into a tender bond that the gossiping world and his family will not allow. As her star rises, his begins to fall. Kaagaz Ke Phool (Paper Flowers) was India's first film in CinemaScope and Guru Dutt's most personal work. It failed at the box office on release, and Guru Dutt never again took a director's credit, but it is now counted among the greatest Indian films. V. K. Murthy's shafts of studio light in Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam, sung by Geeta Dutt, are among cinema's most famous images.
