Saudamini is a bright, bookish young woman in a Bengal village who loves Narendra, an educated young man. Instead, her family marries her to Ghanshyam, a calm, decent grain merchant from a joint family, where his stepmother rules the household with a sharp tongue. Resentful and still drawn to her past, Saudamini struggles against her new life while her husband's patience quietly works on her. Based on a story by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Swami is one of Basu Chatterjee's most admired films, a sensitive study of marriage told with restraint. Shabana Azmi won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and Girish Karnad is memorable as the gentle husband. Rajesh Roshan's songs include "Ka Karoon Sajni Aaye Na Baalam" sung by K. J. Yesudas and "Pal Bhar Mein Yeh Kya Ho Gaya".
