Description

Chander, who has nothing, and Lata, whose family has everything, are childhood sweethearts separated when her parents take her to Bombay. Years later a wealthy friend finds him work there in a musical instrument shop, and he discovers Lata has become a celebrated poetess under another name - and is engaged to the friend. Mehboob Khan's film was the biggest Indian release of 1946, and its twelve songs are why it is still played: Noor Jehan sings five of them, including Awaaz De Kahan Hai with Surendra, and a small number called Tera Khilona Toota made Mohammed Rafi's name.

indiancine.ma
indiancine.ma's entry for this film misdates another Mehboob Khan picture inside its own summary. It says Hum Tum Aur Woh, 1918. That film is from 1938.
How we knowThe sentence appears in the summary of THIS film, where the entry compares it with Mehboob's earlier triangular romances, so anybody following our link to that entry reads it. Hum Tum Aur Woh is a 1938 Sagar Movietone production directed by Mehboob Khan and photographed by Faredoon Irani, the same cinematographer as Anmol Ghadi. 1918 is impossible: Mehboob had no directing career then. The same sentence reads 'childliood' for 'childhood', so this is optical character recognition damage in a scanned encyclopaedia rather than a claim the archive is making.
What we found
Sources disagree on Anmol Ghadi's release date. The encyclopaedia article gives 11 November 1946; Cinemaazi gives 18 April 1946.
How we knowThe difference is load-bearing on this page. Surendra was born on 11 November 1910, so the November date makes the premiere his thirty-sixth birthday - a coincidence worth printing if it is true and worth nothing if it is not. The summary now attributes the date to the source that gives it rather than asserting it, because one of these two is wrong and nothing consulted settles which.
