Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal
Younger half of Shankar-Jaikishan; the duo's public face · 1929–1971
Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal was born in Vansda, Gujarat, on 4 November 1929 and trained on the harmonium before moving to Bombay. As the younger half of Shankar-Jaikishan he was the duo's glamorous public face, credited with many of its romantic melodies and with its adventurous background scoring.
His work runs from Barsaat (1949) to Mera Naam Joker (1970), by way of Love Marriage (1959). He died in Bombay on 12 September 1971, aged 41, with the commercial failure of Mera Naam Joker still being felt. Records also spell his surname Pankal, a slip that appears in some credit lists.
