Shankar Singh Raghuwanshi
Senior half of Shankar-Jaikishan, house composers of R.K. Films · 1922–1987
Shankar Singh Ramsingh Raghuwanshi was born in Hyderabad on 15 October 1922 and began as a tabla player with Prithviraj Kapoor's Prithvi Theatres. There he met Jaikishan, and together they became Shankar-Jaikishan, the composers behind Raj Kapoor's R.K. Films and the sound of Hindi cinema for two decades.
From Barsaat (1949) through Awaara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955) to Mera Naam Joker (1970), they set Indian melody to lush orchestration, with Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri writing the words. They also scored Love Marriage (1959). After Jaikishan died in 1971, Shankar went on working under the joint name. He died in Bombay on 26 April 1987.
