Anubhav (1971)

Amar and Meeta Sen have been married for years, but Amar's punishing work schedule has left no room for intimacy or children. Meeta takes charge: she dismisses all the servants except old Hari and runs the household herself, and the couple slowly grow close again. Then Meeta's old flame, Shashi Bhushan, re-enters her life and takes a job in Amar's own organisation. Amar sees them talking, and the past begins to threaten the marriage. Sanjeev Kumar is Amar, Tanuja is Meeta and Dinesh Thakur is Shashi Bhushan, with A. K. Hangal as Hari; the singer Subir Sen appears as himself, singing a Rabindra Sangeet. Basu Bhattacharya wrote and directed it, shooting much of it in Tanuja's own flat on Altamount Road, and it is the first part of his trilogy on urban marriage, followed by Avishkaar (1973) and Griha Pravesh (1979). It is remembered for Geeta Dutt's songs, among her finest, 'Mujhe Jaan Na Kaho Meri Jaan' and 'Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota', written by Gulzar, and for Nando Bhattacharya's black-and-white photography, which won a National Award.
