Rajendra Krishan
Lyricist and writer; wrote every song and word of Padosan · 1919–1987
Rajendra Krishan, credited as Rajinder Krishan, was born Rajendra Krishan Duggal on 6 June 1919 in Jalalpur Jattan, in Punjab, and was one of the most prolific lyricists and writers of Hindi cinema. His songs range from the cheeky to the patriotic, 'Jahan Daal Daal Par Sone Ki Chidiya' from Sikandar-e-Azam (1965) among them. After Mahatma Gandhi's assassination he wrote 'Suno Suno Ae Duniyawalon, Bapu Ki Yeh Amar Kahani', sung by Mohammed Rafi to music by Husnlal-Bhagatram, and it was a great hit.
For Padosan (1968) he adapted the Bengali story, wrote the screenplay and the dialogue, and wrote every song, including the duel 'Ek Chatur Naar', first sung by Ashok Kumar in Jhoola in 1941 and sung here by Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey. He knew Tamil and wrote eighteen scripts for AVM Studios. He was said to be the richest writer in Hindi cinema, because of a jackpot of 4.6 million rupees he once won at the horse races. He died in Bombay on 23 September 1987.
