Description

A woman arrives in Mussoorie certain that the drummer at the local hotel drove her sister to jump from the third floor, and sets out to destroy him - without knowing she has already met him under another name. A murder mystery built as a musical, and the film that made R. D. Burman. The certificate in this print's first frames is not the film's original one. It is a re-certification: number 83067, issued at Bombay on 8 February 1977 and expiring 7 February 1987, eleven years after the film came out - Indian certificates ran ten years, and a film still in circulation had to be passed again. It gives the gauge as 35mm, the length as 4739.41 metres over 18 reels, and the language not as Hindi but as URDU, which is how the Board classified a great many Bombay films of the period. At 24 frames a second that length is 10,366 seconds. This copy runs 9985, which is 96.3 per cent - a PAL transfer accounts for 96.0 of that, so the print is European and very slightly over, a logo or a tail rather than a cut.

The songs

Film: तीसरी मंज़िल (रंगीन) / Teesri Manzil (Urdu) (Colour). Gauge 35mm, Length 4739.41 Metres, Reels 18. Certificate Number 83067. Date of issue 8-2-1977, date of expiry 7-2-1987, Bombay. The film was released in 1966, so this is the certificate it was passed again under when the first ten-year term ran out - the document in the print is a re-release artefact, not the original paperwork. And the language it records is URDU, for a film every database files as Hindi.
4739.41 metres is 10,366 seconds at 24fps; this copy runs 9985, which makes it a PAL transfer rather than a cut print. arithmetic on the certificate — 4739.41 m / 0.4572 m per s
How we knowAt 0.4572 metres a second the certified length is 10,366 seconds. The file runs 9985, or 96.3 per cent, where a 25fps PAL transfer of a 24fps film gives 96.0. The 34-second difference is a tail or a distributor's logo, not a missing reel. The second upload folded into this page runs 8627 seconds - 83 per cent of the certified length - and really is a short print.
