Description

Devdas and Paro grow up together in a Bengal village and are meant for each other, but his proud family rejects the match because hers is of lower standing. Too weak to defy his father, Devdas lets her go; Paro is married to an older widower, and Devdas drifts to Calcutta, where his friend Chunni Babu introduces him to drink and to Chandramukhi, a courtesan who comes to love him selflessly. Bimal Roy's adaptation of Sarat Chandra's novel is often counted as the finest of its many film versions. Dilip Kumar's restrained, haunted performance won him the Filmfare award for Best Actor and cemented his image as the tragedy king. Suchitra Sen made her Hindi debut as Paro, and Vyjayanthimala won a Filmfare award for Chandramukhi, which she famously declined, feeling it was a lead role.
