Saagar (1985)

Mona runs a small restaurant in a Goan coastal village. Raja, a poor fisherman and her childhood friend, loves her but cannot bring himself to say so. Ravi, the heir to a rich industrialist family, arrives from the USA, and he and Mona fall in love without Raja knowing. Ravi's grandmother, Kamladevi, opposes the match because of the class difference. Kamal Haasan is Raja, Dimple Kapadia is Mona and Rishi Kapoor is Ravi - the pair who made Bobby together in 1973 - with Saeed Jaffrey and Madhur Jaffrey, formerly married, in the supporting cast. Ramesh Sippy directed it, from an original story by Javed Akhtar, with songs by R. D. Burman; one reviewer calls it Sippy's ode to Casablanca. It was meant as Dimple Kapadia's return to the screen twelve years after Bobby, and production delays meant three other films she made came out first. It was India's official entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, won four Filmfare Awards, and stirred a national debate over a split-second topless shot of Dimple, like the waterfall scene of Mandakini in Ram Teri Ganga Maili the same year.
