Sharmilee

Kanchan is painfully shy and comfortable only with animals; her twin sister Kamini is vivacious and confident, and every marriage prospect for Kanchan ends up choosing Kamini instead. On a snowbound trip to Kashmir, Kamini sneaks into an army mess for food and meets Captain Ajit Kapoor, and the two are instantly smitten. So when Ajit's guardian, Father Joseph, arranges a match with "the girl next door", Ajit mistakes Kanchan for the girl he met, and a chain of mistaken identity begins. Halfway through, the romance turns into a mystery and then a thriller. Raakhee plays both sisters and Shashi Kapoor is the captain, with Nazir Hussain as Father Joseph and Narendra Nath as Tiger. Samir Ganguly directed it for Subodh Mukherjee, from an original story by the novelist Gulshan Nanda; S. D. Burman wrote the music and Neeraj the words. Neeraj was S. D. Burman's own recommendation to the producer, after the poet had impressed him on Prem Pujari. The songs are what the film is remembered for: 'Khilte Hain Gul Yahan' appears twice, as separate Kishore and Lata solos, both in raag Bhimpalasi, and it reached Binaca Geetmala's list of top songs of 1971.
